Qualifications

What sort of qualifications do I have to call myself a home inspector?

The experience that has prepared me most for starting a home inspection business is my 15+ years in the construction industry; and my experience in selling energy upgrades for renovations that have included: windows and doors; furnaces, HRV ventilation, and air conditioning" insulation for attics and walls.

I graduated from the Carson and Dunlop educational program and their field training. My formal  training in preparation to becoming a home inspector was taken through Carson Dunlop Engineering.  I am also trained in the NRCan enerGUIDE program as an energy advisor, and as an energy assessor in Energy Star and enerGUIDE 80  verification for new home building.
This helps me udestand the home as a system and the building dynamics of  a home through building science.

There are many new building standards for new home building in Ontario for 2012 on.   One should not be inspectiing new homes and resale homes from 2012 and onwards without intimate knpowledge of Part 9 for foundations, structural, building envelope, health and safety, and defect recogntion; and Part 12 having undergone a widespread overhaul recently in energy conservation for new homes.

Once I finished my formal training I wanted to join a home inspectors association.  As with almost everything, there are many options available for that as well.  I decided on joining the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors (interNACHI),  as well as the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors (OAHI). because both organizations offer a variety of educational material available that are not found in one professional organizational membership.
In order to remain a member, I have to fulfill certain continuing education requirements that these associations have set. I typically take more than twice as many courses in a year than many of my collegues
