Fergus

With a population of about 10,500 Fergus is the largest community in Centre Wellington.  Originally the town that is now Fergus, was settled by freed slaves.  This settlement was called Pierpoint Settlement after its leader Richard Pierpoint.  Richard Pierpoint was a first generation slave, born in Senegal.  After his death, Pierpoint settlement died as well.  The land was sold to Scottish settlers.

This Scottish heritage is still evident in Fergus.  One notable example is the annual Scottish Festival and Highland Games in Fergus.  This event is the largest of its kind outside of Scotland.
